J&C Joel, specialists in the restoration of period theatres designed by legendary architect Frank Matcham, were the obvious choice to carry out the refurbishment of the Grand Theatre in Blackpool – one of the UK’s most iconic and best loved venues.
The 1,100 capacity theatre was the first venue designed by Frank Matcham to be built using cantilever technology to remove the need for pillars which can block the view of the audience.
J&C Joel manufactured a complete set of Front of House Curtains for the theatre as part of a restoration project that began in 1990. Given the venue’s rich history, J&C Joel manufactured the Grand Theatre’s Front of House Curtains from a rich special dyed blue mohair Lear Velvet Velour, with gold tasseling adorning both the curtains and the proscenium drapes.
This special dyed Lear Velvet Velour was chosen specifically for its similarity to the mohair velvet used in the original Front of House Curtains which graced the theatre upon its opening in 1894.
