J&C Joel was asked by Rob Sinclair to provide their drapery solutions for the “When All Is Quiet” exhibition at York Art Gallery, created by the indie rock band the Kaiser Chiefs.
The unique exhibition, which ran from December 2018 to March 2019, examined the boundaries between art and music, creation and performance. The band brought together works by internationally regarded sound artists which have inspired them to look at sound in new ways.
For the project, J&C Joel provided a complete turnkey solution from design consultations and fabric selection through to the full installation of our services.
J&C Joel used their brand-new product “Trevira CS Joelastic 4.5” (STR028) in the shade grey, to manufacture a pair of drapes measuring 5m wide x 3m drop and another pair measuring 7.m wide x 3.0m drop.
This fabric was chosen due to its extremely stretchy properties which, when under tension, created an exceptionally flat surface, for the incredible content and lighting design from Rob Sinclair to be projected onto. This extra wide fabric allowed for a seamless finish which was vital for the clean look required.
In addition, J&C Joel manufactured a drape out of their black Premier Blackout fabric (PB001) for the exhibition’s ceiling. The drape measured 6.06m wide x 7.91m drop and was finished with eyelets on every side to allow a sturdy, fitted attachment to the ceiling.
This fabric is ideal for exhibitions as its heavyweight, thick properties provide excellent acoustic absorption to reduce unwanted noise in the room and its brilliant masking and blackout properties ensure that unwanted light does not enter the room and the room is kept dark for the art to be displayed.
The exhibition was a success and the drapes produced amazing results when combined with the artwork. This was an incredible project to be involved in and we as a company look forward to collaborating with Rob and his team in the future.
